5 Inclusive Design Tips to Create Accessible Social Media Marketing Content

Design Tips to Create Accessible Social Media Marketing Content

Jim is in charge of the marketing department of a large, multinational life insurance solutions provider based in Bronx, New York, USA. A few weeks ago, his team developed a social media marketing campaign to promote their newly-launched group insurance scheme for Small and Medium Sized Businesses (SMBs). The campaign was quite successful, and the insurance firm received several calls requesting it to provide more details. However, one prospective customer, who owns a rapidly growing seafood company, telephoned Jim and complained that the social media posts published as part of the campaign were not visually impaired-friendly. He told Jim he was a lieutenant colonel in the US Army Special Forces and lost 80% of his eyesight in an accident; the veteran lamented he had a lot of trouble going through the content of the posts. Jim apologized for the inconvenience and requested an appointment, and the former soldier suggested they meet at noon the following day.

While the interaction with the differently-abled prospect yielded a positive result, many potential customers with disabilities tend to ignore social media marketing posts (or, for that matter, any marketing content) that they can’t access. This can have serious implications for companies – a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed nearly a quarter of the American adult population suffers from a disability. If businesses don’t make their marketing content on social networking platforms accessible to these people, they stand to lose a substantial number of promising leads.

So, how can firms make their social media posts accessible to all, including those who are differently-abled? They must focus on the following inclusive design aspects while creating the posts to ensure everyone can read them without any problem.
